Foreword
Clarity, clarity, clarity!!! Many times we listen to music and we have a song that we like or an artist we like, but there is always that one part that - though we love the song - we can't understand a word the person is saying. So, as we move forward, I just want to say that it is a "humbling pleasure" to share this listener's guide with you. It's because of lyric sheets that an artist cannot hide behind his beats and catching hooks. He must be held accountable for every word he recorded. This is challenging. So please be mindful that no one is perfect. So, here we are at the second release from B. Morr, Self Denial.
While Self Denial is not a popular topic, it's very necessary for the Christian life. No man that says he follows Christ should have a personal and intimate relationship "Pride." So, this album really focuses on challenging the believer to be honest, humble and to deny self. To deny yourself means to no longer consider yourself. It's putting God and others before you. It's a painful, yet necessary process that must take place in the heart of a true born again believer. And for the unbeliever who, by nature, seeks to please the flesh daily, know that humility in Christ is a true "sought after" character trait for someone who will actually enter into the gates of heaven. Please know that pride; self love and disobedience to the Word of God are all disgusting stenches in the nostrils of God. So as we begin, with every bar that was written - may Christ be glorified.

The Music
Like most beats, this beat went through some "changes." Initially, I had collabed with a friend on the beat. I did strings and the piano. So, basically, I just took the strings and the piano and e-mailed them to Joe to lay down some drum work and there you have it. The Self Denial Intro was born. Once Joe laid the drums for it, I just knew it had to be the Intro track for the CD. In addition to the drums, Joe laid down a heavy piano bass line as well. I thought that was genius. And the beat really flows perfectly for where the words are going. Hopefully the strings and the piano brought out the urgency and depth of how necessary it is to deny ourselves. Especially if we are publicly proclaiming to be followers of Christ.

As we open Self Denial, we have no intentions on delaying what should already be taking place in the Christian life. Consequently, most intros start to introduce the artist or get you really hyped and excited about the rest of the CD so that you won't turn it off by the fifth track. Well, this is a bit different. Not that there is anything wrong with the aforementioned things, and as much as I'd love to give a banger as the first track, an album titled Self Denial demands just that from the artist. Prayerfully the intro sets the tone that at no point will the listener "feel good" about themselves or be prompted to be pleased with self. But to put it off. See the heart as the wicked idol factory that it is. And find all joy and peace and pleasure in Christ alone.

The Music
Ahhhh, the first of the Joseph Delacruz beats on the album. Believe me, there will be more from this guy on this CD. When I first heard the beat I didn't know what was going to go over it. No clue. Over time, it was clear that the second track had to also set a tone for the rest of the album, kinda to reinforce the tone that the first track set. This one would not be so solemn, but rather a tone of rejoicing.

This song is very key to this album. It's also placed here for a reason. It must be understood that we must humble ourselves to the sufficient Word of God. While many other religions will try to make us believe that our bible is inaccurate and has many mistakes in it, we must have faith in God. We must trust in His word and what it says. The bible itself says that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). This means that it's ENOUGH. We don't need to add to it. There is nothing else that we need to help us in this life but the Holy Word of God. Oh how I wish we, as believers, could hold to that and stop looking for other authors and pastors to write books to steer us away from the scriptures. Sadly, its like sometimes we line the bible up to whatever theology book or even Christian fiction book that we're presently reading. And we use the book written by man as a standard. But no, my brothers and sisters….the Holy Bible is the standard. Hands down.

The Music
Beat by Joe. This beat was just one of those laid back type joints. Not a whole lot going on, but still pretty good. I think it was the drum pattern that Joe used on this joint that drew me in. He's really good with the beats that really pull a lot out of you as a lyricist. This is one of those songs, though, that if you don't have an ear for rhymes, you may get bored very fast. There is no catchy hook and no break. Just straight bars throughout the whole song. So, while I'm loving this beat, I'm aware that this may be a "skipper" for some. Clearly understandable.

While most may recognize this from the Youtube video, I'd say this was probably one of the longest, but clearest songs I've ever written. I say that because it really embodies many things that I believe on it. And just captures many biblical teachings that I wanted to put out in rhyme form for a long time without being confined to a specific topic. I wrote these bars a nice long time ago. For some time I'd wanted to record this song and now I had the opportunity to do so over this beat. I believe it was fitting. And I pray that the above scriptures that are referenced for this song is meditated on thoroughly and properly.

When I heard this beat, I wasn't sure what it was going to be. With a very victorious and unifying sound to it, I soon discovered that it would be perfect for the words that you hear on it. It was very authoritative in that it called for either a song of unity or a song of careful rebuke. Prayerfully the instruments used in it will pull that side of the emotion out of the listener. And combined with the words, have an edifying effect on the believer to earnestly contend for the faith and seek peace with those actually in the body of Christ. Yes, I'm hoping the beat does all that. :-)

In just about everything, I'm finding it accurate that you will have ignorance in anything you think you know thoroughly. Even yourself. There are still things that the closest people that know you are still learning about you. Now, I wrote most of this song while thinking about a couple relationships that I had that went sour over differences that were had. It grieved me that folks were willing to divide over things that were not essential to salvation and didn't change the nature of God. And even still, there was no forbearance or love shown and it hurt, to be honest. If you really think I'm wrong, do you bounce or do you stay and help me see the error of my ways? Imagine the results if one truly bore with another till God opened their eyes to the truth as opposed to just leaving them alone to fall deeper and deeper into inaccuracy. So, the message in this song is really just a message to all those in the body to seek peace with others in the body. This does not mean that you sacrifice truth for the sake of unity. Its TRUE that doctrine divides. But it's TRUE that doctrine can UNITE. But with the pride that resides in the hearts of those who know truth, it will continue to divide us till we no longer look like one body.

The beat was made years ago by a friend of mine that I was in a group with. I was holding onto this beat for years and always wanted to do something to it. I already had one verse written, so I just needed to make it a full fledge song. Definitely feeling the hype drive of the song and how "rock and roll" it is. Mind you, I was very impressed by my boy J. Williams not only that this was made years ago, but it was all done on computer software. This song is fictional story that I came up with to pull out many points. I couldn't possibly expound on them all. For starters, I really wanted to do a story song, to begin with. I wanted to see if I could keep people's attention. I hope so. Anyway, the story is really about many things. Unfortunately, it's a sad reality that most of us have experience "the scare." And it was more than likely with a boy or girlfriend and not a spouse. Ahhh, the price of disobedience is a costly one. It's not just the fear of the circumstance, but the Holy God that you have offended with your sin. For the record, the story is not about me. There were certain points in the story that did reflect experiences that I had in previous relationships before the Lord truly drew me to Himself. Which just brings up another point that many people think they are saved and are sinning habitually. And the bible says that that person is deceived. You cannot be saved and live in habitual sin. At any rate, Marcus embodies what most men have gone through. Especially men who are not saved, but think they are saved and they are just "trying to do right." But as you can see in the story, when your flesh drives you, it doesn't matter how much doctrine you know, how many church services you attend and who your parents are. If your flesh is driving you, then everything will eventually come crashing down. Christina is another example of a good church girl all into the church and her church activities and falls for this guy. They are both drawn to the perfection of the other. I mean, come on, fellas, you find a girl who is strong in her Word and can probably exegete better than some preachers you've heard, that will draw a dude in QUICK. But how far in and how fast, is the question? Sometimes we can be so blinded by the beautiful, Christian characteristics that we fail to exhibit character, integrity and obedience to God. Many people may not feel this song is appropriate. That's probably because of pride. Nevertheless, not that each verse has a direct point in which we humble ourselves to 1) God 2) the Bible and 3) each other. Many people are sooo prideful that they get the first two and have yet to learn what it means to exhibit godly humility when it comes to their brothers and sisters in Christ. Like toddlers, sometimes its more about who's right rather than if love and Christian integrity is being displayed before one another.
Also, the reason why this part II is because part I was done when I in a group with a friend. We did a song called humble yourself. And for this album, I really wanted to keep that theme of humility going. I had more to say on it, so I did a part II. Is part one available for people to hear? That's a great question. Also, I give a special shout out to my former group member who I did Humble Yourself Part I with. This line was my way "honoring" him (for lack of better words) and our union we had as a group back then.

Just for clarity, Romans chapter 6 talks specifically to the believer. If you are not born again, then all of this will either make no sense to you, or you trying to do it is an exercise in futility. Believers are under grace and not the law. We must continue to put off the old man because he no longer lives. Our life is Christ now. And when Christ died, we died with Him. But when He resurrected, we rose with Him. So this song is an anthem for the believer that we are no longer slaves to the sin that so easily entangles.

Ironically enough, I think I was checking out webshots.com online one day and just sitting in awe of some of the beautiful pictures that men have taken of the breathtaking scenes all over the world. My sister Jenn (aka LifeInReturn) really appreciates the beautiful scenes of nature and when I hear this song playing I think of some of the beautiful pictures she's put up on her site that really take your breath away. This beat was another one from years ago. I can't front - but if most producers were honest, some of the jams that we love that come out at certain times, they are probably really old beats that were never used. Sorry to expose that secret, yall. But anyway, I basically pulled this back out of my stash and touched it up. For all of you who don't like the syrupy sounding songs, prayerfully you can appreciate the words. :-) I constructed this beat specifically to be melodic. I confessed on the ITM listener's guide that I'm no good at drums. So, you will definitely hear more of an emphasis on the strings and the melodies you hear over the drums. The drums are really simple. Sometimes I think they might be a bit too simple.
I was SO happy to finally do a track with my beautiful, best friend Charaya aka Jewel. It was funny cause she's supported me from the sidelines ever since I've started rapping. So, after years of doing it and then I ask her if she would sing on this track - at first, she didn't even take me seriously. But I was very serious. We put in a few sessions - just to make sure that we were both pleased with her performance and I have to say, I was more than happy with what God did with this song. I wrote the words, but Charaya came up with the harmonies and the different parts that you hear her singing. She added it so that the song would sound a little fuller on the hook and I think it was genius. I didn't know she had it in her. I don't know if she knew she had it in her. But praise God, I love songs like this. Every now and then its okay to step away from the gritty, grimey boom bap.

This is just a straight up praise and worship song. Sadly many songs that are considered praise and worship are void of just that. But this song is not so much about how I feel about God, rather who God is. Period. Not who God is to me, or what He's done, necessarily, but just Him. So many times we fail to bask in just straight up truth about God.

NO SAMPLES! Do I have anything against samples? Of course not. I'm just a big fan of all original music. I like putting something together from scratch and just creating a beat with whatever is on the inside. Hope that makes sense. My favorite part of this beat is the piano that drives it. Pretty jazzy. In my opinion, this beat works for this track because even though its looped, and the track is long, it doesn't get too redundant after awhile. At least, I don't think it does.

The Message
This song is basically another story joint. However, its very self denying because the story is basically a list of actual accounts that actually happened in my life. While everything is not expounded upon in much detail, the points to the story are direct enough to share my experience in Holy Hip Hop and how I got to where I am today. As far as a timeline goes, that is. I guess I'd rather not try to FIND some Scripture to justify the reason for writing this song, but it was really just another way to deny self. And that was tell my story. Not for me, but to just show people the sovereign hand of God in my life.

When I first heard this beat, I liked it but I didn't know what I was going to say to it. I had the second verse to Wake Up already written but it never dawned on me to do that song to that beat. But I eventually put it down to the beat. I was a little skeptical at first but then Joe came up with the intro. Just have the piano come in and then the hook fades in as well. That did it for me. I was hooked. And its been one of my favorite songs since.

What is happening to our kids? Sometimes I find myself crying and praying for God to return just to get the glory and put an end to all this godlessness going on in our world. When did breaking records for murders become the best thing to present on the news? Out of all the news to give the city, THIS is what we give them. I don't understand sometimes. However, God wrote in His Word that times like this would come (2 Timothy 3:2). My prayer for the youth of today is that someone break the cycle. It seems that simple advice doesn't work sometimes. You find a 30 year old telling an 18 year old to not do this and not do that because it WILL lead down a road of destruction. The teen doesn't listen, 10 years go by and he goes down that road and almost destroys himself. He now lives with the consequences of his choices. He then, being 28, tries to talk to an 18 year old about the same thing that he was once talked to about. And the cycle seems to just continue on throughout time. That's why people gotta get saved, man. We gotta get our young people saved if we really expect to see a difference at all. Please Lord, come quickly.

This is another old beat. I made this like 3 years ago. This beat is key for the message going over it because even though we want the beats to always be nice sounding, and edgy or punchy or whatever, we want it to bring out the words even more. And with the lone violin, my hope is that it reflects the broken heart, crying out. I know it may seem pretty far fetched, but seriously, that's what I'm hoping it does.
