I was walking downtown at the Baltimore Inner Harbor with my girlfriend and her family and we saw these two guys playing instruments on the side.  One guy was playing the guitar while the other was playing the Indian flute.  Which I didn’t know it was called that at the time.  I loved the sound it made.  I loved it so much that I bought the CD that they were selling and went online to youtube to see if anybody else played this instrument.  I found out that I had the instrument in my huge library of sounds (producers know what I’m talking about) and just had to use it in a song.   Hopefully the transition of Table Talk brings things back down to a real meditative vibe.  The beat doesn’t have a lot going on in it on purpose.  The main driving melody of the beat, though, is the Indian flue during the talking parts.  The vibe it contains is something we pray creates a platform in which the lyrics can really grab you.

On July 20, Pastor Abraham was assaulted by Hindu extremists in India. According to contacts in India, During a worship service at Friends Mission Prayer Band Church, in a small village, 20 members of a radical Hindu group assaulted Pastor Abraham in the presence of his family and congregation. During the attack the mob destroyed all the Christian literature in the church, including Bibles.

Several pastors and prayer group leaders in Hyderabad were attacked and severely beaten by Hindu extremists. The Christians were returning home from a Christmas prayer meeting near the suburb of Ramnagar. Following the Christmas attacks and the systematic attacks by Hindu extremists in August 2008, Voice Of the Martyrs provided immediate assistance to persecuted believers. The August 2008 attacks resulted in more than 116 believers killed.

Recently, a Saudi member of the religious police cut his daughter’s tongue off and burned her to death for converting to Christianity. Her brother found some Christian articles written by her as well as a cross sign on her computer screen. Since then he started to insult her and blamed the Internet for pushing her to change her religion.  The father, who works for the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, killed his daughter following a debate on religion.

Three Christians in Chiapas, Mexico, were brutally killed by their neighbor after he blamed them for his daughter’s stomach ailment. Antonio Gomez blamed his Christian neighbor, Pedro Gomez Diaz and his family, for his 11-year-old daughter's stomach ailment and accused the Christian family of practicing witchcraft.  Gomez and seven of his friends entered the Christian family’s home and attacked them with machetes. Pedro, his wife, and their oldest son, were hacked to death. Six of the other Diaz children were seriously wounded.

A large crowd of Muslims attacked Christian families at a church, throwing stones and firing guns. A young woman named Sandul, and her father, were arrested after a mob from the local mosque surrounded their house. Loudspeakers from different mosques broadcast accusations that Christians had disgraced the Quran, calling Muslims to attack and burn their homes. The angry crowd threw stones and set fire to Sandul's home. Christians believe Sandul and her father were targeted and arrested because they were aggressively winning villagers to Christ.

When I think about the things happening to believers overseas it further confirms how spoiled we are here in America.  Though Jesus warned us that being a follower of Him that we would see persecution.  So, this song is somewhat of a confirmation reminder to all my brothers and sisters overseas to be encouraged, knowing that Christ’s promise is being fulfilled in you.  Though I know its rough, some of us are praying for you and your safety.  Here in the US, we gotta do better.  Persecution is probably the only thing that would divide the church of today of the true believers and the people playing church.  I pray it wouldn’t take some of the things mentioned in this song to truly evoke the servanthood of Christ from a person.

Another beat where I wasn’t sure what it was going to be before hand.  All I knew is that it had a jazz, groovy feel to it.  So I had to call up my boy Jason to see if he could create a bass line for the song and he obliged.  If I’m not mistaken, this song (at some point) I think was going to be the intro.  But I could hear myself humming the tune to the hook and just had to put words to it.  But Jason’s bass line really just adds a groove to the beat that it didn’t have before hand.  Its become one of my favorites on the project.

Initially, this song was going to be a song called Walk With Me.  I was going to have a song about just how I look out into the world and how I feel about it.  However, it really weighed on me that perhaps I would be talking too much about me in this song.  So what I did was just change the focal point of the things that I see in the world and my take on it, I would write a song that focuses solely on God’s holiness.  Just talking about how set apart He is and how filthy we are.  I hope it turns out better cause I’m glad to hear this song now knowing that its solely about the Lord.

Okay, so yes.  That is me singing all the parts.  Honestly, this is the type of music – during this era – that I love.  It dawned on me that when a lot of rappers are in interviews they are asked who their biggest inspirations are and they mostly say a lot of old school Soul singers.  But none of their music sounds like what they say is there greatest influence.  So basically, I just wanted to put this song on this album because this is the kind of music that influences me.  And so I thought it’d be kinda cool to actually do a song LIKE this so that I wouldn’t have to sample a song from that time just to have the same effect.  I hope people can still get into it cause I know its not “HipHop”.  But its different and that was the goal.  A friend of mine in Kansas City is a huge Sam Cooke fan and its that era that we just fell in love with, musically.  I hope he enjoys this song.  You know how you are.

Regardless of the style of song, there is always a message.  This particular song is derived straight from the scripture above. Many times when we look at the law of God we feel like it’s a restrictor.  We look at it like it’s a bad thing and we dread it.  But the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.  We should find peace and joy in knowing that the law is put into place to protect us but not to harm us.  I pray that all those who don’t have any respect for authority or God and His word would repent of that today.  And no matter what other offers come in from the world, we will forever find joy in the statutes of the Lord.

Okay, so you got me.  Perhaps this track didn't have a set in stone message when going into it, however, we never half-step even when it comes to a track like this where two artists just come together and use their talents to glorify the Lord.  But for those who haven't gotten it, the word Canon is a play on words.  Canon meaning a body of principles, rules, standards or norms.  And the fact that Steve says Cannon al the time.  That's like his "thing" and its catching on to a few of us.  And, if you haven't caught on by now, Stephen and I both have the same middle name...Douglas.  Spelled the same way and everything.

The Music

I had no idea this beat would be a cypha track.  And honestly, when I get beats from Joe, I just get the beat which is normally just a loop.  There is no intro (where the piano is just playing without the drums) and no fancy way the beat drops or nothing.  So when you hear a beat you really have to have a vision of the whole song and see where its going.  But normally Joe figures all that out.  And when I first heard what he did with the intro of this beat – scratching B-doe’s sample in – I went nuts!  I thought that was so hot.  And obviously we used that idea to intro each artist that comes in.  I’m very pleased with how the beat turned out and how each scratch turned out.

The Message (Ephesians 2:7)

For the past 5 years or so, I’ve constantly been floored by the story that Ephesians 2 tells us about ourselves as believers.  Paul talks about how God took us from darkness to light.  And he elaborates on how we were following the course of this world and being dead in trespasses and sins and we were by nature children of wrath.  But that God was rich in mercy by his love He MADE us alive with Christ.  Each artist on this track elaborates on how God made us alive with Christ.  Not we ourselves made ourselves alive with Christ.  Or even that we chose to be alive with Christ.  We were DEAD in sins.  And the only way anyone can be alive after being dead is if they are raised up by another.  Thus being taken from darkness and brought into the marvelous light.

Tidbits

The beat drops every time the Lord is mentioned in each person’s verse.  Kinda like a reverential period in each verse.  And notice how we don’t do any other dropouts of the beat for any other part of the song, not even punchlines.

We are told constantly, as believers, to kill our flesh.  To deny ourselves.  To love others more than self.  So because this nature exists in us, we need reminds and songs to continue to drive us back to the fundamentals of self denial.  Not to mention that this world preaches a message of “do for self.”  Its all about getting yours and succeeding in the eyes of men.  So this song is just a straight battle between the flesh and spirit.

I really hope you enjoyed the listener’s guide as well as the album.  Many times I know people want to know specific lyrics and the artist they’re listening to doesn’t have lyrics to all his/her songs anywhere.  As a listener myself, I just know the feeling of wanting to read along.  It also helps to really check out the flow of an artist and see how they flipped certain words or rhyme schemes.  I just pray that Search Me has been an album that was entertaining, challenging and most of all, one that glorified God.  As time proceeds, I may be looking to doing more music but right now, our focus at B.
