Fore-word
The following listener's guide goes with the free CD entitled
"In the Meantime." It was designed, first and foremost,
to magnify and uplift the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ through the venue of music. To edify believers and preach
the gospel to unbelievers. And the least is that it is a sampler
CD to give the listener a very miniscule glimpse as to who this
guy (B. Morr) is, what he sounds like and what he's doing with
Holy Hip Hop these days (why am I speaking in third person like
I'm not here?). Though many may not know, I've been doing HHH
(for those who don't know, HHH = Holy Hip Hop) for a few years
now. I've had some appearances here and there, done several
shows with a group and a few as a solo act. Currently standing
as a one man band, this here CD that you are listening to or
are about to listen is my humble breakout into HHH. Just a short
CD of a couple of songs that I've done while my first LP, entitled
Self Denial, is still brewing in the pot down in the dungeon.
As Self Denial is extremely close to completion, I just want
to give you all a very small sample of what to expect from me
as an artist. So let's jump into it, shall we?

The Music
This beat was created by my friend and brother in Christ, Mr.
Mike Guess. Possibly, better known as Protege. We (Pro and I)
were just sitting in the lab one day and he was letting me hear
his beats and I heard this one and it was perfect for what I
wanted to do. I don't think he even realized that there was
any potential in this beat as he claimed to me several times
(before I stated that I wanted it) that "it wasn't finished
yet." But to me it was fine. It's very plain and not a
whole lot going on. I long for beats like this sometimes. When
one finds such simplicity in a drum pattern - aww man, it just
drags me in. I also like beats like this because it doesn't
put a lot of emphasis on instruments you have to follow in a
beat that's doing a whole lot. Those kinds of beats are wonderful
as well, as we'll get to later, but every now and then you need
the audience to not focus on the beat so much, but the words
that are being said. And, in my opinion, this beat is perfect
for the task of being "heard."

When writing this intro, I really didn't want to introduce myself,
per say. Surely the listener wants to know who they're listening
to. However, I really wanted to expound as much as I could on
the sovereignty of God. Specifically on God's sovereign election
and the inevitability of sanctification for God's own. This
is probably one of the first things that hit me the hardest
when the Lord really started to reveal to me who He is through
scripture. Wow, the sovereignty of God….I'm just in awe
of it. So often times people (knowingly and unknowingly) use
the concept of "free-will" as a means to conclude
or rationalize how they obtained things they asked God for.
Namely salvation and/or sanctification. But the bible says that
"he which hath begun (meaning God starts it) a good work
in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (and God
finishes it)." Our conformity to Christ is inevitable,
if you are saved. I wish people could really see how helpless
we are against the sovereign plan of a merciful and just and
gracious God. When we study our Word and God shows us how wretched
our hearts really are and how holy and awesome and MERCIFUL
He really is, WHO WOULD WANT TO BE IN ANY KIND OF CONTROL?

The Music
About 2 or 3 years ago, when I was in a group called First Line
of Defense, my friend Jay made this beat for a song we were
going to do. A year later, that beat would inspire the beat
for this song. Though the original beat was never released,
I thought it not robbery to use some of the same instruments
that Jay used in the original beat. I tried to keep it simple,
but some may say that it has its complex areas. Let me take
a second to make this pretty clear before I continue. I AM NOT
A BEAT MAKER! LOL I do not claim to be a beat maker by far.
I merely use what I have to the best of my ability to glorify
God through music. And in my case, I didn't have money to pay
anyone for beats, so I simply made them myself. Definitely not
my gift, but God is still a provider. Good beats, bad beats
or okay beats…I now have beats. :

The Message (Genesis 19:24-26, Philippians 3:13)
Based out of Genesis 19, this song is about leaving the former,
moving forward, and not looking back. The metaphor (in a sense)
is that we are on this journey as Christians and God is directing
our paths. And He may remove us from one situation, or what
have you, and we turn our heads to look back at what we left.
As if we've left something of value that we need that or something
God forgot to bring with us. Or, sometimes, we even start walking
back to what God brought us out of. Forgetting that if we really
think about it, we know that there is nothing of value behind
us. Also, the hook was changed to make a point a little more
clear (thanks Lee). In the latter part of the hook, it says
"We've come this far and we ain't turning around. By the
grace of God, we ain't turning around. Originally, I just said
"we've come this far and we ain't turning around"
twice at the end of that part. Ladies and gentlemen, I am not
perfect by far. So in this case, God graced me to heed the loving
words of admonishment from a brother that suggested that it
can be easily received that the only reason we aren't turning
around is because we've come so far. And though this is true,
we have come a long way, you don't want a whole bunch of people
believing that "well, we've come this far, we might as
well keep going." NOOOOO!!! : Some of us HAVE come very
far from where we were when God snatched us out of the world
or out of certain habitual sins and situations. But though we've
come far, it is still ultimately the grace of God that keeps
us from turning around. Not our merits or the distance. Pressing
forward for the mark of the high calling. Not simply the distance
we've come. Which, in essence, is also the Lord's doing.

The Music
Probably one of the weirdest beats that I've ever made. I definitely
do not have any real finish line when I sit down to create a
beat. Mostly, any time I sit down to do a beat, I have a melody
in my head already. No drum ideas - I don't even know what instruments
I'm going to use. Just the melody. I think the first thing that
came to me during the creation of this beat was the backwards
horn that comes in midway through each verse. And then everything
else just came about. As many might conclude from observation,
I'm definitely not a "drums" dude. Possibly not a
good thing for someone who makes beats, but what can I say?
I'm a melody kinda guy.

Since I graduated high school, God has geared my heart towards
the teens in the body of Christ. When I look at our youth, our
precious teens, I see a bunch of young people at the brink of
finding out who they are going to be. I see the wanting and
longing of acceptance or to fit in. Every generation has its
uniform. For the time being its huge t-shirts and jean Capri's
for dudes and for the ladies, the shirts are getting tighter,
the shorts and skirts are getting shorter every summer. I say
all that to say that the world puts a great deal of focus (if
not all the focus) on your outer appearance. So as to attract
others' eyes to you. So much attention (from media) is placed
on sex - I mean, the motto that has been prevalent for years
is what? "Sex sells." So what happens year after year
is that secular music, movies, and commercials take sex and
make it more and more meaningless. The holiness of sex (within
the marital confines) is nowhere to be found (and sometimes,
that's in the church too). As a society we've completely thrown
out that sex is ordained by God for marriage ONLY. Churches
are passing out condoms and telling teens that if you're going
to do it, just protect yourself. NO!! These kids must realize
what they bring on their souls when they engage is this unholy
act. This act that there is no coming back from. If you engage
in sex before marriage, you will regret. Especially as God continues
to grow you up in Him and you begin to understand why this mandate
is placed on us believers as single young men and women. And
then you will definitely regret having disobeyed God. I could
go on about this for hours as I earnestly desire to educate
teens and discuss with them about some things in the bible that
tell us very simply why God says to flee fornication. And as
far as sex goes to wait until marriage.

The Music
One day, Joe just sent me over a few beats to listen to. I don't
think he had planned for me to say that I wanted to use any
of them. But when I heard this beat, I just had to write over
it. I love the feel of it. Again, I'm a very melody-loving guy.
And though this beat isn't really doing a whole lot melodically,
you can still feel the vibe of it. It's very laid back and peaceful.
Thought it's still laced with some decent drums, the drums don't
take away from the sweetness of the tune of it. Also, on a side
note, it was my intent to take it back to the old school with
my style of rapping on this song. So, if anyone is curious as
to why I sound like I'm rhyming in 1989, it's because this beat
really took me back. And so I intentionally wrote these bars
and recorded them in a way that might reflect an older time
period. So I did my best to lay off too complex of schemes or
anything complicated. Definitely no "punching in"
needed for this one. :

It's a shame how the children of God are wired so that pretty
much the only thing that forces us, motivates us, moves us to
seek God, cling to God and trust God, is trials. This is not
how it should be, so I'm not saying that this is how it is for
every Christian. But as I looked at my life, I saw that when
something happened to me in my life that kinda shook me and
got my attention, that is when I seriously got in the face of
God. I mean, actually praying and STUDYING (not just reading)
His word on a daily basis for like 4 months. But once the heat
of that situation subsided, I was back to doing me again. And
so this song is my statement of accountability that God is steadily
molding me into an "everyday" Christian that depends
on Him 24/7. And He's stripping away the "when the times
get hard" Christian that once dictated and fueled my decisions
based on emotions. This song is about being at peace. When everything
is going crazy, we are still loving and seeking God whole heartedly.
And also, when nothing is seemingly wrong, when there is no
storm or trial in our lives at the current moment, we should
be seeking God just as earnestly and diligently as we do when
things are seemingly going bad. Truth be told, that kind of
Christian needs to evaluate himself as that kind of attitude
is still fueled by selfishness, pride and only seeking God to
get them out of whatever situation they are in that is uncomfortable.
Brethren, please examine yourselves. And desire to seek the
face of God and not merely the hand of God. Seeking out what
He can do for you and not who God is merely makes God a paramedic.
In your perspective you've brought down the essence of God.
He comes, fixes your situation, and you don't care one bit about
that guy once he leaves. That is a very bad and dangerous position
to hold as the revealing of God's total sovereignty over your
measly life will hit you like a ton of bricks. But that's probably
what we need.
Also, I normally don't laugh or giggle or chuckle on a track.
But I praise God for Him using me to speak messages through
rap. Cause it effects me too. I recorded these verses one day
and then came back and did the adlibs. I didn't re-listen to
the verses I did the day before, I just jumped into recording
the adlibs. And when I heard that I said "surrounded by
your love like meat in a hot pocket" I just had to chuckle.
You guys hear a chuckle, but I edited out the part where I busted
out laughing. And just for fun I left it in there.

How much really needs to be said about the second coming of
Christ? Sadly enough, many believers, preachers, pastors - many
Christians, basically, allow the reality of Christ's second
coming to totally slip their remembrance. We fool ourselves,
by way of temporal circumstances, into thinking that THIS IS
IT. That the buck stops here. Well, it doesn't. "Death
is not a period, it's just a comma." If we could focus
less on our temporary situations and if we could really detach
ourselves from the things of this world, we would see that God
is not even into anything temporal. It's like our bodies and
our emotions have sticky hands and we attach ourselves so easily
to things that will wither and die. Namely claims that God has
to do what we say, material things like money and possessions,
and also EACH OTHER. The bible says put no confidence in man.
Yet we still put much dependence and trust in other people instead
of God. Beloved, set your affection on things above, not on
things on the earth!

This is yet my feeble attempt at making a beat that was quote/unquote
"hype." As many might have already seen, I'm not really
a hyper guy. I try to come out of that as often as need be and
when it's necessary. Anyway, I created this beat a while ago
and didn't know what I was going to do with it. As most artists
can relate, it had so many different roles. In that, at one
point in time, I was going to use it for this, then things changed
and I as going to use it for that. Then things changed and I
as going to give it away and so on. And so here it finally is.
As mentioned before, I'm not a drums dude, but I did my best
in that I really wanted to make a beat that thumped and was
a kinda freestyle beat. So, though I feel like the pattern is
extremely plain and elementary, in my selection of drums I hope
those that are really heavy on drum work can simply appreciate
my humble attempt of an all drums beat.

Like any beat, before it becomes a song, it probably has numerous
other intents tagged on it prior to being what it becomes. This
beat was to be a song that a group I was a part of was going
to do. Needless to say, the beat never got used and by permission
of my man Jay, I was able to use this song for this purpose.
I really felt like this beat really brought out The Message
in this song (which we'll get to in a second). But the bass
line is what really attracted me to this beat. And then the
soft Rhodes….aahhh, very soulful and smooth. It gives you

When writing this song, there was one ultimate point we wanted
to get across. And that is total dependence on God. One thing
I'm confident of is that one of the reasons God took my mother
from me is because he made me a go-getter. I go after something
hard. And my "dependence" gene would probably have
me very dependent on my mom for the things that God wants me
to depend on Him for. And because God does what He wants to
get what wants - and despite what we think, NOTHING or NO ONE
denies God what He wants - I believe now that God taking my
mother was definitely for my good. Over the years that's been
extremely hard to say, but I still strive for perfection and
I still strive to be one who trusts in the Lord with all my
heart for all things. Along with Protege, whose father was murdered
only weeks before Christmas of 2004, God was merciful in that
He didn't take away our emotions. We still hurt tremendously
at losing a parent. Be it to cancer or a bullet. However, He
was merciful in that He opened us to the Word in Daniel 4:35.
And that reads (in the NASV) All the inhabitants of the earth
are accounted as nothing, but He does according to His will
in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and
no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, 'What have You done?'
God knows what He's doing. And when He takes the lives of people
(according to His sovereign will) from this life - as hard as
it is - we should be in a position of gratitude. Knowing that
He does all things well. Nothing takes Him by surprise. Lastly,
know that we possibly all have similar situations concerning
the death of someone we love, but we do not exalt these situations
above God. God allows these things to happen to us for numerous
reasons, but two that we can point out are 1) that you realize

The Music
I'm not sure I could have used weirder sounds. Surely there
are weirder sounds out there, but for me, this is kinda weird.
What I remember most about making this beat is coming up with
the little laser sliding up and down during the hook. I just
had to keep it, no matter how off or weird it sounded to me.
And although I wasn't sure scratching would fit over a beat
like this, I still wanted Joe to scratch that sample over the
beat at the end. But this beat was the first beat that was made
and assigned to the Self Denial LP.

The Message
Wow. I just remember the first few bars that I wrote for this
song. It was an eye opener for me. Writing this song and being
so honest with myself almost got me to the point where I doubted
my salvation, where I doubted my devotion to God. I considered
all my ways - the deep internal things about myself that no
one knew and I saw that I lived no different than the person
who isn't saved. And though this troubled and grieved me tremendously,
God reassured me through His Word that He who has begun a good
work in me shall finish it. The text speaks for itself. One
thing I noticed was how vivid the story of Hosea was. In correlation
of how the church treats Christ her Lord, if we look at our
own sins in OURSELVES, we can a huge similarity. We run away
from Christ instead of running to Him. But there is hope. That
is why the last hook of the song is changed up. It's a cry out
to God - who is the only one who can grant such a request -
for Him to change our worship. Like Ambassador (of the group
Cross Movement) said, "its not that we don't know how to
worship, it's that we don't know who to worship." And most
of us worship ourselves in that we do what it pleasing to US
first and foremost. We consider our own lives and timeframes
and schedules and desires because ultimately it's ourselves
that we are in love with and not God. This is who we are by
nature. So this song is basically a focus shifter. A worship
analysis challenging all believers. And also a confession I
make because all of these things are me. I am as guilty as the
next man.
After-word
So I say to you all, be encouraged. I pray that these songs
have honored God, edified the body and been a witness to the
unbeliever. As time progresses and I am currently working on
the Self Denial LP, I ask that you keep me in prayer that only
God glorifying music will be released. I pray that all the songs
on this sampler are a blessing to someone.
