The following listener's guide goes with the collaborative CD by B. Morr and Teddy P, entitled "Closer." It was designed, first and foremost, to magnify and uplift the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the venue of Holy Hip Hop music. Secondly, to edify believers. The songs are constructed for the edification of believers, however, there is still the prayer that any unbeliever who hears this music will hear the Gospel in the lyrics and see the love that we have for our Triune God…and be compelled to repent and believe on Christ. Lastly, Teddy P and I came together and saw this as a great opportunity to provide the Body of Christ with music that will prick the heart to desire to grow Closer to our Lord. And we are proud to present you with a sample-free album. So let's get into it.

The Music
Starting off, I’m gonna try to describe the beat and the vibe that I caught that provoked me to write what I wrote rather than start off every song with “TEDDY P IS A MONSTER ON THE BEATS!!!” Yes, this is true. However, because it’s true, please know that each beat has a very peculiar and key reason why it is where it is. Starting with the intro. When I first heard this beat, which was intended for the intro, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to rap for a lot of bars and break or a little bit of bars and get someone to sing something on it. One thing I can say about Teddy P’s beats is that they can be so good – and to me, I LOVE melodies – his melody-work in addition to his drum work – it can be really intimidating at times. By intimidating, I simply mean that when you hear it, you don’t want to write anything wack over it. You almost don’t feel “worthy” (and I use that word lightly) to do over the beat whatever you come up with. But what we got was the intro. And Teddy P added a few more nuances to the beat to help bring it out more and make it more personable.

As you go through the lyrics, quite a few things are mentioned for an Intro. Its intent is to communicate that we get closer to God by knowing Him through the avenue of reading His Word. This is how we get closer to God. Though fellowship and worship music can aide us in being (and staying) God-centered, we get closer to him by knowing Him…His ways, His thoughts….etc. And we don’t learn that based on our own moral views or what we think God likes and wants. Even our experiences tell us things about God (i.e. He’s sovereign, He’s a deliverer, etc.) but they, in and of themselves, do not suffice as sole means to help us know more about our God. And definitely not based on what someone else says, primarily. But by reading His word. This is done through prayer and bible ready. Prayerfully this song will start the album off right with the sound intended to be worshipful and the lyrics directed to God as a plea to “do whatever it takes to bring me closer to you.”

The Music
Okay, when I first heard this beat, I fell in love with it. There are so many little nuances going on in it that drew me to it. It’s so melodic and musical…this is right up my alley as far as preference goes. I love really catchy melodies. So my goal was to create a catchy hook. Surely when I went to go write the hook, there was only one person that I thought who’s voice would be perfect of this beat….the one and only Jewel. I might be saying that because I’m partial to her, but that’s neither here nor there. She killed it on the vocals. In comparison to Lord Jehovah (Self Denial) I definitely wanted her to be doing more vocally and lyrically. And when I say lyrically I mean she’s saying more on this song. She’s not just singing the hook but doing the whole second part of the second verse and a line at the end of the first verse. And just for the record, she came up with the arrangement for the background vocals on the hook. AND the harmonies. It was definitely a pleasure working with her on this song as it presented itself to be more challenging and she took the task head on and did excellent.

The Message (John 15:6 & 7, Ephesians 2:8)
When I think about Abide In You, there is an emotional attachment, for sure. I mean, we hear it all the time how we were once afar off and made nigh…once in darkness now walking in the marvelous light…dead now alive. These are not cliché’s to me. These are humbling realities. Primarily rooted in Ephesians 2, Abide In You reminds me mostly of the time that I THOUGHT I was saved and wasn’t. I heeded to a lot of church tradition to give me that Blessed Assurance that we sang about Sunday after Sunday. An assurance I claimed based on a falsehood. I figured that I’d cried a couple times. Maybe shouted a time or two and I called that the Holy Spirit. Sprinkle a few good deeds on top of that and I’m saved. But this is deception. This is not a completely accurate depiction of how one can know they are saved. I mean, the reality is, as saved as I thought I was, God could have let me stay right where I was…..self deceived like in James 1:22. Where I’d hear the Word but I don’t do the Word. And have no desire to. But praise be to God He granted me the gift of repentance of my sins and faith in Christ alone to save me from the wrath that was due unto me. Now I can SEE!! I can see how off I was. I can see God’s mercy in Him allowing me to see how off I was. And I’m so glad that I abide in Him. Not of my own deeds but of His grace ALONE.

The Music
Upon hearing this beat, I knew right off the bat that it should be a story song. But what story could I write to this that would stay in line with where the album is going. We’ll get to that later. Musically, I was feeling the vibe of the beat. I knew that I had to be careful with the delivery cause if I’m telling a story I really want people to be able to follow what I’m saying as well as convey a message that sticks to the where the album is going. The beat isn’t really complex and it’s not doing a lot. But that is perfect for a story song. Hopefully it encourages you to listen in on the song and really grasp where it’s going.

The Message (Acts 9)
The whole intention of this song is to portray in some way how God has brought me closer to Him. The reason for the two different verses is to 1) show a contrast of the two different guys themselves and 2) when it’s revealed that they are the same person, to show how different one has become as a result of the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. My goal was to display (in the first guy) how easy it is to LOOK the part but I think I was pretty telling of what was going on on in the inside of the heart of guy #1. I was (even in my own opinion) the “perfect gentleman.” I used charm to get what I want (charm is deceitful). I used the nice guy image to win people over. But the reality was that no matter how good I thought I was and how good other’s thought I was, I was hell bound. No repentance had taken place….I used R&B lyrics as therapy for relationships and counseling others in their relationships. How wacked is that? But in verse 2, that’s where I am now. A great change has occurred. One that displays a HUGE contrast between me and the me I used to be – in my heart….my motives. I so desire to please God with my life and I really do grieve when I know I have sinned and disobeyed Him. There was no grief with my sin before I got saved. There is no grief over sin with ANYONE who hasn’t been regenerated. Overall, I just wanted to point out 1) the contrasts and 2) how God used all that – seeing how wretched I was and how I thought I was doing all this good – He allowed me to do all that for that long until He was ready and then He changed me. And even being able to look back on that see how deceived and lost I was, it only makes me cling to the cross that much more…..bringing me closer to Him.
Extra Stuff
There is a line that I just want to make clear. There was a note written to me about it (which I’m very grateful for) and wanted to just bring some clarity to it just in case anyone else feels the same way. In the song it becomes clear at the end that I’m telling a story about two guys that are both me. So yeah, I’m rhyming in the 3rd person. In the first verse, I say the following line:

Now, what I intended by this line – knowing that I’m essentially referring to myself – was that this guy (the old me) just “knew” he was a great guy. A great catch for any girl. A sweet young man who many look up to. He pridefully said these things in his head but to further enhance the appearance of humility and modesty he would never SAY these things to people. And no doubt, I thought I was X, Y and Z back then, but when I got truly saved (cause I thought I was saved then and wasn’t) God showed me how bad off I really was. So, just to clarify that that line wasn’t intended to have any underlying motives to talk about how good I am but to tell a story about how good I thought I was. And again, to the natural eye and to the secular eye, I was probably good. I didn’t do drugs, didn’t break the law or dress like I didn’t know what a belt was. So, in the WORLD (which is the mindset I was trapped in) I might have been considered “the bomb.” LOL

Originally, this beat was on Teddy P’s More Beats project. This is one of those beats where I just HAD to rap over it. I loved the way it came in and everything. There is so much that I wanted to get across in this song. Mainly is that I thank God for His adopting me into His family. I then wanted to celebrate that in this family I have sisters and brothers. This concept is BANANAS to me. Because they’re like real sisters and brothers. LOL Its crazy how there are so many people in the faith that I have developed relationships with that I can truly call a sibling in Christ. Brothers that I can truly call on when I need counsel or wanna vent. Sisters that will support you in prayer and encourage you when you’re feeling discouraged. We stick together like a body is supposed to. No man is an island. No one in the body should ever be comfortable saying “I’m a loner.” We need each other. And I just wanted to write a song that reflects 1) my gratitude and sincere elation to be in the Body of Christ 2) just wanted to throw in there on the second verse how one can NOT act and be assured that he/she is actually in the Body of Christ. And 3) just celebrate the times that I’ve spent with many of you in the faith. The 3rd verse is dedicated to you. No matter where we are, you give us an Applebee’s, Fridays, or an IHOP and it’s on. Originally the drum pattern threw me off. But once I realized that I was thrown off, I had to write to it. I still want to challenge myself to write to stuff that I normally wouldn’t feel all that comfortable with. But again, Teddy P got me with the tunes. I love what all the instruments are doing. And the craziness during the hook is mainly what hyped me to write the hook and everything else pretty much fell into place around the hook. This is obviously a more upbeat song but hopefully it still lines up more so theme-wise with the album that it doesn’t seem out of place or forced.

The Message (Psalm 100, Psalm 150)
Obviously the root of this whole song is Psalm 150:6. This song was strictly designed to just be a praise song. A song by which we could get a little loose and celebrate God just for who He is. Not just “what He’s done for me” but simply who He is. There is mention for what He’s done for us…The things He’s done for us are great and He deserves due praise for that. But if He didn’t do those things (for me) He’d still be sovereign. He’d still be worthy of praise. He’d still be faithful and awesome and wonderful. I mean, I could go on, but I digress.

This beat is sick. There, I said it. I couldn’t hold it in much longer. Much props to Teddy P for this beat because it definitely has a very different feel to it. I kinda almost sorta can’t put my finger on it. Originally the song was already written to and its just God’s providence that it fit over this beat. I wanted to fit as many hymn titles as I could in one song. It was funny at first cause I called myself trying to be slick and just go on www.cyberhymnal.org and pick out some random hymn titles that are like sentences so I could make rhymes out of them. By the way, if you haven’t been to cyberhymnal.org you need to “track-19-on-Self-Denial” cause you are surely sleeping. Anyway, I found myself picking out titles of hymns I had never heard or heard of before. And I asked myself, what if someone asks me about any of these hymns? I would look really silly not knowing what its about or even how it goes. So that was a bad idea. In the end I used all hymn titles of songs that I know very well and can at least recite the first verse to each and give you the tune. The Message
Essentially, this song was written to pay homage to the hymns of old. These are songs that just have withstood the test of time. Yes, hymns are truly timeless. No matter how many “gospel” songs from the 80’s the choirs sing, there are none of those songs that we sing everyday in churches all over the country. Hymns (for the most part) are solid doctrinally and they teach theology in them….and some even teach how to rightly apply that theology. We must not forget nor lose the importance of the hymns.

The Music
If its not clear that this beat deserves to be entitled Reverence, then I don’t know what could make it clearer. The beat is very worshipful and introspective. This is why I didn’t want a catchy hook going on in between verses cause I wanted the whole song to be focused on Christ. It’s cool to have fun and wild out and celebrate Christ but I felt this track was perfect to offer up due reverence to Him. Just a song where three individual artists would offer up praise to Jesus Christ for who He is and what He’s done in the lives of believers. For this song, I called on my friends B-doe and Evangel to help me. I am extremely moved by B-doe’s verse. He was actually the first one to have bars for this song. Then I shot the beat and my lyrics to Evangel and he agreed to hop on the song. I included Evangel on this song (as opposed to something a little more up-tempo or more “hip-hoppish”) on purpose. In my opinion, he’s really known for stepping on grimey/hip hop-ish tracks (i.e. Phanatik’s R&R from the Incredible Walk, Timothy Brindle’s Sacrifice of Worship from Killing sin, etc) and utterly destroying them – he’s gonna kill me for saying that. But I just wanted to utilize him for something a bit different. And I think both of these artists did an exceptional job and I want to thank them for their contribution on this song and on this project. Though I got two guys whom I respect lyrically on this song, I pray that nothing we did or said overshadows the message provoking the believer to truly reflect on Christ and give Him due reverence throughout this song and ultimately throughout their lives.

One of the most innovative beats I'd ever heard.....period. The drum pattern is really different than anything I'd heard, let alone rapped over. This beat was an obvious worship song. I don’t think there’s much else that could be done over it that would be adequate. This is another beat (mainly cause of the musicianship and drum pattern) that I was really nervous to write over. Because when you hear something that you just fall in love with – just the beat alone, no words yet – you don’t want to write words and it mess the vibe up. The Message (Isaiah 6:5)
When I was writing this song, I was thinking heavily on how Isaiah was before the Lord. I mean, when I consider my prayer and meditation time…like, when I’m really honest with God and reading things in His word…it’s a very vulnerable time. The deepest secrets in my heart he knows in vivid detail. In essence, every man stands before God exposed for who they truly are. Plus when I’m reading His word….His word shows me what He already sees. I’m not just exposed before God, His word exposes me to me. I can see just how filthy I am….still He is pleased to bestow mercy and love to me. It makes me turn further away from my sinful ways and cling that much more to Him.
After-word
Prayerfully this project has been a blessing to you and helped aide in guiding you back to the Word of God. To dive in and get to know our Lord more intimately. Also, I pray that you’ve benefited from listening to the music…that it can be easy on the ears and enjoyable. Even as we strive to make doctrinally sound music, we don’t want it to be hard to listen to. Teddy P and I thank you for your continued prayers and support. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with you (Teddy P) on this project. Its release means a lot to me and I pray that it achieves whatever purposes God has set for it to do.

Ultimately, it has been a real honor to present this album to the Lord Jesus Christ. A very small portion of my eternal gratitude for saving my soul and just for being who He is.
